A year ago I wrote Making Drupal Send Emails via Live.com on Free Hosting Server. This time I want to apply the same technique on Drupal site in GoDaddy. I am using GoDaddy's Economy 4GH web hosting plan which is "Instantly scalable. Aggressively secure. Incredibly fast. A completely unique hosting experience." as advertised for $4.99/month. So far it is better than the conventional shared server hosting plan I had before from a different provider. I hope GoDaddy will keep to its promise since there are many bad reviews about it around the Internet.
SMTP Relay is Metered
GoDaddy give one free email account for each domain name registered with them. We can use the free email account to access the GoDaddy SMTP server to relay emails. However, GoDaddy limits relaying emails using the free email account to only 250 emails per day. The caveat is that GoDaddy sells SMTP relay service for $2.99/month for 50 emails per day. Thus, the more emails you need to send in a day the more you have to pay.
Go create the free email account and get the SMTP server details.
Free Email Account
Login into GoDadday and go to My Account->My Products. In My Products, click Email. Click Use Credit for Free email with domain. In the Setup Free Account box, select your domain and click Continue. In the Email Account box, click Setup Account. The Email Control Center will open. Click the Add button on the right. The Create Mailbox dialog box will popup. Fill in the details and click OK. The new email account will take a while to create. You may need to refresh the page until the account status turn active. When the account is active you may launch the webmail by clicking the envelope with arrow up icon in the Actions column on the right.
SMTP Server Details
The way to get to the SMTP server details: In the GoDaddy Email Control Center, in Email->Email Plans->Plans->Email Plans, in the row of your newly created email account, in the Actions column on the right, click the small hammer and wrench icon to launch the InfoCenter to get the email settings and setup information. The Email InfoCenter dialog box will open. In the Email Server Settings section, look for the Outgoing server (SMTP) address and the open port number. If available, choose port 80.
Drupal SMTP Module
Next step, install Drupal SMTP module. And in the module settings, apply the SMTP server address, the port, your newly created email's user name and the password accordingly. In Drupal 7, we also need to set the system admin email to the newly created email address (this could be a bug in the SMTP module so look for the module update). That's all. We can start testing the configuration by sending test emails. You can monitor how many emails have been sent in the GoDaddy's Email InfoCenter.
If you plan to email-verified millions of members on your Drupal site then you need to be prepared to burn a lot of money for the GoDaddy's SMTP relay service.
Update
According to the GoDaddy help center article, their Hosted Exchange email does not limit SMTP relay.
